[glow=black,2,300]Q:[/glow] I heard that women working in South korea are given "menstruation leave" each month. What's up with that?
[glow=red,2,300]A:[/glow] [glow=black,2,300]That's right _____ South Korea's Labor Standards Act gines women one day off per month during the period of their.... period. Until recently, that was a paid day off ---- but in 2004 the law was amended to give businesses the option of making the leave unpaid. Since that change, Thou-sands of women sued their employers to demand paid mentrual leave, and labor unions have taken up the cause as well.
According to an October article in the Korea Times, the goverment and many businesses have resisted calls for paid menstrual leave, saying it would be too much of a financial burden in light of recent improvements to maternity and paternity benefits. The law allows new mothers and fathers to take up to a year off work, with monthly payments during that leave set to increase to 500,000 won ( about $530 ) sometime this year, according to the Korean Ministry of Labor.
Mentsrual leave isn't unique to South Korea --- it's on the books in Japan, too, though it works differently. According to Japan's Labor Relations Act, "women workers can request leave when they find it extremely difficult to work during their menstrual periods.... You yourself determine whether it is difficult to works; a doctor's certificate is not required."[/glow]

[glow=black,2,300]Q:[/glow] In Germany, they use bubbly bottled water for everything including to dilute juice, wine and (shudder) beer. What's up with that? [glow=red,2,300]A:[/glow] [glow=black,2,300]For one thing, Germany has numerous springs from which mineral water flows, and Germans used it for both drinking and bathing. Sixty-five springs are tested regurlarly by the German goverment, according to the web site www.germany-tourism.de Drinking mineral water became a way of life after World War II, when the quality of municipal water was very poor and all water had to be boiled, according to Brita Kramer, who teaches the Germnan Heead Start program at the Stuttgart Welcome Center.
Kramer also note that in most German restaurants, people can come and stay for as long as they want. So tehh restaurants make them buy something, such as bottled water.
Germans think the bubbly minrel water tastes good and the bubbles do a better job of quenching thirst. But what about spoiling a perfectly good glass of juice, wine or even beer with bubbly water? "The only reason to do it is to reduce the alcohol in order to be able to drink more wine" said Tom Schaeffer, whose family operates Weingut Schaeffer in Hambach, near Neustadt.[/glow]
